Gynecomastia:
Gynecomastia is a condition that primarily affects overweight men. In some cases, the enlargement of the breasts is due to benign growth of the mammary gland, while in others, it is caused by the accumulation of fatty tissue. When the cause is benign glandular enlargement, surgical resection of the gland is necessary. In cases where fatty tissue is the cause, liposuction—either traditional or laser-assisted—across the entire affected area is the preferred treatment. Sudden gland enlargement in older patients may indicate a malignant process that requires treatment and is not a subject of aesthetic surgery.
Liposuction:
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the amount of fat to be removed. The advantage of laser liposuction over traditional methods is a shorter recovery period. A small incision is made in the skin, through which a fine cannula with an optical laser fiber is inserted. By gently moving the cannula, the laser beam destroys fat cells by breaking down their walls.
Surgical Breast Reduction:
This procedure typically involves making an incision around the areola or under the armpits. The surgeon removes part of the glandular tissue and excess fat and skin. In cases where a significant portion of the gland needs to be removed, some skin must also be excised to achieve an aesthetically pleasing contour of the chest.
Before the Surgery:
Necessary medical tests, a consultation, and an examination by the surgeon are conducted right before the surgery. Ten days before the procedure, you should stop taking aspirin, herbal teas, vitamins, and blood thinners. Smoking must be ceased 8 hours before the surgery, and no food or liquids should be consumed.
Risks:
The main risks associated with the surgery include bleeding, infection, loss of nipple sensitivity, and asymmetry.
The Surgery:
You will stay in the clinic for 24 hours under continuous medical supervision. The surgery is performed with absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed. Dressings are not changed; instead, protective stickers are used, offering better infection protection.
Recovery:
Immediately after the surgery, you may experience temporary bleeding, swelling, significant discomfort, pain, and temporary changes or loss of sensitivity in the nipples and surrounding area. These symptoms are most intense during the first 3-5 days and gradually subside. Nipple sensitivity typically returns within 6 weeks to six months, though in rare cases, it may take longer or not return at all. You can return to work within a week, resume more strenuous activities after a month, and scars will gradually fade over several months. Wearing a special elastic bandage continuously for the first month is mandatory and recommended for longer. Sleeping on your stomach is strictly prohibited.
